Helping you handle those difficult times

The session that took place on 14/8/13 was focused primarily on Language; specifically how we interpret language and the connotations that come with it. The session was split into three main chunks.

The first chunk involved reading the short description three different exhibitions in the FACT building and then comparing whether our interpretations of the exhibition matched the interpretations conveyed in the description, though this proved difficult with one, which was an exhibition based on the controversial Fracking process by HeHe. The author of the description refused to give any standpoint on the work, it was left for the viewers to come up with their own opinion. The overall question of this chunk was; ‘How important are first impressions?’

The second chunk focused then on we can convey our app through the language we use, and how important it is to get it right. To demonstrate this, we were set a task of re-writing a page/article of our own choosing, the aim of which was to see whether any of us attempted to copy the original text’s style (font, layout, etc) instead of using the default settings, surprisingly very few did attempt to imitate the original text, which then took the discussion to whether changing something about the original text would create a completely new piece of work or not; for example if I choase to re-write the Harry Potter series word-for-word, except changing the word ‘Wand’ to ‘Goat’ would that be accepted as a new set or works, or simply a fraud? Despite the tangent, this segment of the day helped us consider not only the contents of what we write but also the presentation.

The final chunk was simply a challenge set by Andy to see how much of a one-minute video clip we could transcribe, first with no pauses and then we were allowed to pause, rewind and take out time with it.
